Now that it's Official HD-DVD is dead, I want my XBox 360 Blue-ray version...

Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses

"TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders [GD: Emphasis added]. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

As I understood it, Microsoft was supporting HD-DVD as long as Toshiba was... So now, this means they can now finally get started on a XBox 360 Blue-ray player (for existing 360 owners) and maybe a 360 with one built-in?

BTW, I think the fate of HD-DVD validates Microsoft's decision to not build it in (as I really doubt it would have made a difference in the final format war outcome). Who ever made that call must be feeling pretty smart... Now be smart again and give us a Blue-ray player quickly ;)

  1. If the XBox 360 had a built-in HD-DVD drive, there would currently be over 10 million HD-DVD users out there. The format war would probably never have ended.

I'll bet Toshiba are cursing Microsoft for not doing so.
