Got your hands on VS2010 Ultimate? Want to know what all the excitement is about its new Architecture features? (i.e. why this is NOT you father’s “Architecture Edition”) Dig just about everything from the VS ALM Rangers? Well…

Team System Rocks! - Visual Studio 2010 Architecture Guide is now available

“The Visual Studio ALM Rangers have made the Visual Studio 2010 Architecture Guide available  on CodePlex.

This guide provides some practical guidance on how to use the architecture tools in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate.  The guide is chock full of information, including common usage scenarios, hands-on labs, as well as real-world lessons that have been learned using the product.

If you want to learn more about the modeling and architecture tools included in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, it is a great place to start.

Project Description

Practical guidance for Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, which is focused on modeling tools. This release includes common usage scenarios, hands on labs, and lessons learnt from the community discussions.
The scenarios include understanding and reverse engineering an existing application or starting a new application from scratch. These are both common challenges that any dev lead or architect faces. The intent is to present you with examples that show how these tools can support you in real world scenarios, and to provide you with practical guidance and checklists, instead of an in-depth tour of the product features.

Visual Studio ALM Rangers

This guidance is created by the Visual Studio ALM Rangers, who have the mission to provide out of band solutions for missing features or guidance. This content was created with support from Microsoft Product Group, members of Microsoft Consulting Services, Microsoft Most Valued Professionals (MVPs) and technical specialists from technology communities around the globe, giving you a real-world view from the field, where the technology has been tested and used.

What is in the package?

The content is packaged in 3 separate zip files to give you the choice of selective downloads, but the default download is the first of the listed packages:
  • Common Questions and Scenarios --> Start here
  • Common Questions and Scenarios Visual Studio Extension Guidance Package (forthcoming)
  • Hands-On-Labs (HOLs), including:
    • New Solution Scenario (HOL)
    • Reverse Engineering Scenario (HOL)
    • Extensibility Extensions (HOL)
    • Extensibility Layer Diagrams (HOL)
    • Reusable Architecture (HOL)
    • Validating an Architecture (HOL)

…”

I like the “Visual Studio 2010 Architecture Guidance  Scenarios” document in its question and answer/scenario format. “I need to do this” and then it provides guidance on using the tools to do that…

For example; “Scenario - I Need A Reusable (Repeatable) Architecture,” “Scenario - I Need To Start A New System,” “Scenario - I Need To Explore An Existing System,” “Scenario – I Need To Validate A System Architecture”…

And what would a ALM Rangers doc set be without pretty pictures!

The Hands On Labs, documentation and resources (code, etc), are also there to walk you though learning about VS2010 and these Architecture features.

BTW, if you find this interesting, you should also check out , Professional Application Lifecycle Management with Visual Studio 2010. I bought a copy myself and like it. It’s a great overview of all the ALM goodness found in VS2010 (and is authored by some of THE names in the VS ALM world and it shows.)
