Windows Live Mail Desktop beta

"From: The Windows Live Beta Team
Subject: Join the Windows Live Mail Desktop beta

Hello Windows Live beta tester,

Because you’ve been so helpful to us by testing other betas, we thought you might like to try out Windows Live Mail Desktop. It’s a lot more than just another e-mail program. It gives you one place to get e-mail from multiple accounts, read and manage your newsgroups and Web feeds, update your blog, and even call your friends’ telephones.

A bit more about what this program will let you do:

Share your digital photos
Create a custom slideshow that your family and friends can view on the Web, without a bunch of clunky attachments.

Get content feeds
Subscribe to Web feeds from your favorite news sites or blogs using Internet Explorer 7 and then read them in Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta, just as if they were e-mail messages.

Connect with your friends by phone, video call, or instant message
Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta works with Windows Live Messenger 8.0, so you can see your contacts’ online status when you read their e-mail messages, and then IM them, start a video call, or even call their telephones at affordable rates using services provided by Verizon.

Well that’s cool... I’m always open for a new beta. And if it makes getting email from my different hotmail accounts easier, then so much the better.

Initial thoughts:
1) I don’t seem to see that this beta is covered by an NDA

2) ... Pending confirmation there’s no NDA... (But the download and install was very smooth and I’m in WLMD emailing MS now to ask about the NDA... ;)

HI,

I have been awaiting this beta for a long time. I doubt I will get on the beta myself. So now you have had the program for a few days, how is it?
My biggest interest is whether the new program does newsgroups and how well do newsgroup accounts work?

I'm still waiting to hear back from MS to confirm there's no NDA...

Yep, it supports Newsgroups.

I think it's safe to say that you can currently think of WLMD as more like a Outlook Express 7 than as a totally new product.

That's the way it feels from the outside anyway...

With the version I have it just "feels" like OE7. Sure there's a new "Live" like UI, but the engine feels much like OE. At least in rev...

For example, the Newsgroup Subscriptions dialog looks just like OE6's. The Options dialog also looks much the same, with many/most/all the same features/options from OE.

Reading posts also seems to be much like OE (just with the different window dressing).

I'm not ready to do a side-by-side feature comparison, but I'd say if OE can currently do it, then I think WLMD will also be able to do it. Plus more stuff... (like RSS Feed support if you have IE7, easy posting to MSN Spaces, etc).

I hope this helps a little...

Sounds good. I have been avoiding RSS for a long time as I really like to use an all in one email/news/rss program. I just do not like Thunderbird and am a diehard OE user.
The fact that it looks similar to OE6 does not faze me at all, providing I can have all tools under one roof.
I will be keeping an eye on your blog for updates.
Do you know when the beta will roll out further? I am itching to try this.

No idea when the beta will be expanded... I got the invite out of the blue.

If I get an opportunity to invite people into it (like the WL Messenger beta had) I'll definitely let you know....

That would be fantastic thankyou. Not new to betas, currently using live messenger beta and IE7 beta so am used to unfinished work.
I have some available invites to live messenger if your friends need any.

Can do... I don't know if they are going to open beta nominations, but if they do, you'll be the first...
