Random Workplace Blogging Thoughts

Just some random work and workplace blogging thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head...

Work Place Bloggers

  • If your Boss has a blog, subscribe to and read it
  • If your Boss's Boss has a blog, subscribe to and read it
  • If your Direct Reports have blogs, subscribe to and read them
  • If your Peers have blogs, subscribe to and read them

Work Place Blogging

  • ALWAYS be careful what you write, because your boss, his boss, your peers and subordinates may/will be reading it.
  • No one likes an obnoxious "I Already Blogged That" guy. (I am a little guilty of this... Bad Greg.)

It's okay to casually mention that you might have already blogged about a given subject, but don't go overboard, be obnoxious about it and never ever get upset, miffed, peeved, etc that the person/group you're talking too didn't happen to catch a that post. Not everyone you work with has the same passion you may have nor the time or desire to be a feed hound like you...

  • Don't Spend TOO much time blogging when you're "on the clock"

If you're blogging work related stuff, I feel it's okay to blog during "the day," within reason. But remember too much of a good thing is a bad thing...
Also if your blogging about stuff that has no bearing on work, isn't work related, is not of value to your Boss, Peers, Reports, etc, then you may not want to do it while "on the clock"...

  • Understand who owns what. If you signed an IP contract, who really owns your blog?

Make sure it's crystal clear (and in writing) who owns your blog, who's responsible for the content, where the liability lies with it, etc, etc.

  • Never, ever blog confidential or sensitive information.

Common sense, isn't it? Still think about what you write, and its context.

  • Never, ever flame a current or past employer.

Um... dugh? The world is too small and a flame will come back and haunt you. For example, if you flame a past employer, future employers will see that and wonder if you'll flame THEM one day (and thereby maybe avoid that risk and pass...). And on flaming your current employer, see the first point...

Enough for now (since I'm "on the clock" ;) Thank you for letting me get these out of my head. Now I can forget about them and "I already blogged about that..."  :)
